Raccoon meets Neue Heimat
On Holsteiner Ufer stands a yellow house, one of those that also made it to the Berlin Interbau of 1957, but never quite makes it all the way to the front door. Everything here is a bit simpler than with the Aaltos, Düttmanns, Bakemas, and Eiermanns. The house is part of the „small“ Hansaviertel from the Neue Heimat, which was once the largest and most significant non-state housing corporation in postwar Europe. At the end of the corridor lies a small apartment. Here, the sky over Berlin is black. Within just a few square meters, the perhaps most affordable Raumplan unfolds through the dissolving ceiling. And then there’s also a raccoon hanging from the ceiling. A. Loos would probably be beside himself. The inventor, on the other hand, would surely have been pleased though, due to the collapse of 1982, he can no longer have a say. Still under construction….
